Taking Action to Prevent Homes from Critters during Cold Iowa Winters

As the warm weather is coming to an end, homeowners everywhere are preparing their homes for winter. Most people know that Midwestern winters are especially cold and most critters know this, as well. There is no more appealing place for animals to rest in winter than a warm home.

So while the weather still allows homeowners to do a bit of outdoor home improvement activities, we – at Critter Control – have a few suggestions to prevent raccoons, skunks, squirrels and other animals from harboring in chimneys, attics or under porches or decks.

Check the foundation -
Check the foundation for openings and signs of animal entry where pipes, vents and cables exit the house. Depending on how large or small the hole is it can be caulked, but, we would recommend seeking professional help with a larger hole, since it should be restored to its normal condition.

Clean the Yard –
Basic yard maintenance will help prevent animals from making their homes near your home. Rake the leaves and cut back your bushes and grasses, especially around the gutters and foundation, to prevent vole and snake harborage.

Cap the Chimney –
Before capping the chimney, be sure to shine a light up the flue and look for signs of animals. Also, be sure to check it from the roof. If there are any signs of animals, be sure to contact an animal control company immediately. If not, be sure to install an animal-proof chimney cap.

Check Roof and Soffits –

Weather can erode and soften wood that can create places for animals to damage or enter. This is routine maintenance that should be done to your home because rotting soffits give raccoons and squirrels the perfect opportunity to enter easily.

Checking and repairing these items are important to the safety of your home, your family and animals for the winter months. If while going through this list you find animals or any sign of animals, be sure to call an animal removal specialist to ensure it's removed safely and properly.
